First Baptist Church of Rochester (FBCR) was organized on June 1, 1854, in the old Stony Creek building at the corner of Tienken and Washington with 20 charter members. They longed to see the Gospel transform everything: individuals, families, their community, and the world.

FBCR soon purchased a church building on the corner of Walnut and Fourth in Downtown Rochester, and God filled it. In 1977, God moved FBCR’s family to its present location on about 13 acres at 6377 Orion Road. Their vision was to provide additional facilities for greater discipleship opportunities and broader ministry capabilities. God blessed in such a way that the facility was paid off, paving the way for increased outreach to the Rochester community and beyond.

Outreach Emphasis

In 1980, God led FBCR’s people to focus on the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) through a ten-year program designed to increase our outreach efforts financially and personally. God’s faithfulness enabled increased numbers of missionaries to be supported locally and abroad, and higher support levels per missionary or agency. Today FBCR supports over 45 missionary families from 16 agencies, as well as 13 mission groups around the world.

Enthusiasm for outreach sparked interest among FBCR members who responded to God’s call by going on short-term mission trips all over the world. FBCR has had the privilege of representing Christ and transforming lives through the gospel both locally and globally. Our continued bond with our extended missionary family has led us to a unique tradition, celebrated annually since the church was downtown, called Missionary Christmas.

Continued Growth

God continued to bless. 1991 marked the expansion of the church facility to include more classrooms, a new kitchen, and a gymnasium. In 2004, the fellowship hall was repurposed and renovated for more youth and family-focused use. This included a coffee house equipped with an espresso bar and kitchen for special events.

FBCR benefits from a diversity of members and guests from many backgrounds, with many generations represented. God has led families here who are united in love and motivated to serve Jesus Christ, which helped shape the growth of our children’s ministries - from Nursery through Senior High School. Our Jr. and Sr. High students engage in challenging Bible studies and fun activities, and they participate in local service activities along with mission trips and inter-generational service.

Making History

The mission of FBCR is to glorify God as Christian men, women, and children, who are becoming more like Jesus; and to take to the world the good news of who Jesus is, what He has done, and how we are to live. We believe that there is no corner of the earth and no aspect of our lives that is not affected and transformed by this news!
